Transponder Keys / Immobilisers
A transponder system incorporates a Transmitter and Responder (receiver). A glass or carbon "computer chip" is embedded in the head of the key and communicates with the ECU (Engine Control Unit) when inserted into the ignition via and antenna that is mounted on the ignition. This process ascertains if the correct key is being used for the car, which will then start once it is synchronises with the ECU and the key is turned.
Transponders where first introduced in European cars in 1994.
