Automotive Proximity Keys / Smart Keys
Smart Key is an electronic access system which was originally patented by Daimler-Benz in 1997 and is now factory standard in most vehicles.
The Smart Key allows the driver to keep the key fob pocketed when unlocking, locking and starting the vehicle. The key is identified via on of severla aerials in the car's bodywork and a radio pulser generator in the key housing.Depending on the system, the vehicle is automatically unlocked when a button or sensor on the door handle or boot release is pressed. Vehicles with s Smart Key system have a mechanical key back up, usually a spare key blade inserted in the fob and sometimes manufacturers hide the door lock cylinder behind a cover.
Most vehicles with a Smart Key system can be started by a Push-to Start or Turn-to-Start ignitiion while the Smart Key is in proximity.
When leaving the vehicle, it is locked by either pressing a button on the door handle, pressing the lock button on the fob or simply walking away from the vehicle.
Smart Keys usually include transponder technology.
